5 Ways to Be Seen as a Leader at Work - The Muse
5 Ways to Be Seen as a Leader at Work - The Muse5 Ways to Be Seen as a Leader at WorkTheres never been a better time to develop your leadership skills. According to Deloittes 2014 Millennial Survey, Millennials will comprise 75% of the global workforce by 2025. Think about that statistic for a moment, because the implications are huge Within 10 years, Baby Boomers will have all but completed the handoff of leadership responsibilities to members of Generations X and Y. If youre interested in moving into management, now is the ideal time to raise your hand and take the lead. Why now? In anticipation of this global demographic shift, many companies are developing high-potential programs to accelerate the development of their up-and-coming leaders. Deloitte, for example, has a program called NextGen, which aims to cultivate future leaders. I turned to Monica OReilly, a principal at Deloitte Touche LLP and Chief Talent Officer for the firms advisory practice, to learn more about NextGen a nd who makes a great candidate for the program.OReilly, who is a NextGen graduate herself, explains five ways to stand out and be recognized as high-potential. Even if your company doesnt have a program like NextGen, incorporating these tips into your work life will demonstrate your abilities to the people who can take your career to the next level. 1. Deliver Superior PerformanceDont just meet expectations exceed them. Every time. Being recognized as someone who possesses high potential starts with superior performance. The people selected for the program demonstrate a desire to move into top leadership roles, an interest in broadening their perspective across the business, and a strong commitment to developing themselves and others, OReilly says. But in addition to that, they usually have a strong track record of performance over several years. We choose those who demonstrate higher performance in serving clients and taking care of people. 2. Cultivate a FollowershipDo you have th e ability to inspire others to collaborate and take action? If so, you have- or are building- a followership. According to OReilly, if you want to be recognized for your future leadership potential, you should be able to cultivate a followership before you get there. People will follow a talented leader, she asserts. They want to be inspired and motivated. So learn what makes people tick as well as what qualities they respect (here are a few ideas), then begin to cultivate those traits. 3. Be Boldly Self-AwareDo you know your workplace brand? In other words, are you aware of the unique impact you make in your office and how others perceive you? If you want a management position in your future, you should.Thats because emerging leaders must possess strong self-awareness. Understand your strengths and where you can make an impact, says OReilly. And then, be brave enough to make that impact. If you havent yet uncovered your brand or your strengths, try taking a 360-degree feedback surv ey or asking a trusted manager, mentor, or colleague to describe how he or she thinks youre perceived by others. Listen for positive traits that are referenced more than once, and then aggressively seek out opportunities to apply those strengths.4. Think StrategicallyTo thrive in an accelerated leadership program like NextGen, says OReilly, you must strive to think broadly and more strategically. Question how things could be done better and how to add value to the organization, no matter what role you are in, she recommends. For example, lets say you notice a number of customers with similar complaints about your teams product. Instead of reacting to each problem as it arises, try to determine the root cause or look for ways that your team might be better able to anticipate customers needs.5. Attract MentorsOne valuable element of a high-potential program is the opportunity to learn and network with others in your cohort. Youll develop an amazing network of impressive peers who will one day become your network of powerful business leaders. But dont wait for the program to start to develop that group of contacts- start establishing relationships with leaders who can mentor and guide you now. When you meet a person you admire, ask if he or she would be open to having a 20-minute informational meeting with you to answer some career-related questions. If it goes well, ask if he or she would be willing to meet on a regular basis. If you get a yes- youve got a new mentor. When you do get the opportunity to take on a leadership role or enter a leadership development program, make the most of it. If youre selected for any leadership program, embrace the experience. OReilly recommends. Dont be passive about it. Immerse yourself completely, so you can develop as a future leader.

The 3 Worst Types of Nosy Colleagues (and How to Deal)
The 3 Worst Types of Nosy Colleagues (and How to Deal)The 3 Worst Types of Nosy Colleagues (and How to Deal)Over the span of my career, Ive worked in just about every kind of environment you can imagine. But from the small startup that used moving boxes for tables to a giant global institution with hundreds of thousands of employees, theres one thing they all had in common the nosy colleague. So, its probably a safe bet youll zulauf into this challenging species in your career, too- if you havent already. Fortunately, fruchtwein of the time, a nosy colleague isnt anything more than an annoyance. But every once in a while, youll come across an overly curious co-worker who crosses a line. And, if you dont handle the situation carefully, itcould cause issues for your career. Here are three classic nosy colleagues, plus how to deal if youre ever confronted with one.1.The Talker-Turned-TakerMost of the time, Chatty Cathys are pretty harmless and a normal part of your office culture. From ch atting by the water cooler about your weekend plans to pondering what your co-workers are cooking up for the next big team meeting, friendly conversation is a great way to get to know your colleagues on a more personal level and share a bit about yourself, too.But occasionally, theres someone who uses that break room chatter to his or her own advantage. Heres one example from early on in my career When I welches new in the office and trying to get to know everyone, one woman really seemed to be going out of her way to give me the real story on how the place worked, including the latest in office politics and gossip. Along the way, she asked me to fill her in on my own projects, and I didnt see the harm in confiding in her.Until, that is, several months later. Id started a major project and welches set to present my findings to my boss, when I learned that shed taken it upon herself to help me with my presentation. She volunteered to check in with my boss to help make sure I welches on the right track (which I had OKd)- but instead, she had swooped in and taken all the credit for my hard work. How to DealLets face it Information is power, and power-hungry chatty colleagues will use whatever information you share to get an edge. So, when a curious colleague has burned you- whether its stealing your ideas or revealing your secret crush on Bob in accounting to the entire third floor- you can block that power play by keeping your conversations to quick, friendly chats. After this experience, I made it a point to keep my office conversations to a minimum with this woman. I also always had an alibi just in case I was ever cornered I carried around a notebook or had an important email to get out in mind so that I could politely excuse myself from the conversation when necessary.2.The Lingerer-Turned-LurkerIn my last job, I would be completely engrossed in a spreadsheet- or worse, writing an email- and Id notice the office know-it-all slowly walking by my desk.At first, I didnt think anything of it (other than, Seriously, doesnt this guy have work to do?). But one day, while writing a particularly sensitive email to a client, I was overwhelmed with this creepy feeling someone was watching me. I turned around, and my colleague stood right behind me, reading my email as I wrote it Worse, he actually began to make suggestions about what I should say.Unfortunately, this wasnt an isolated incident Ive had a lurker at every office Ive worked at. And while no, you shouldnt have anything that you wouldnt want your boss to read on your screen, anyone who invades your privacy (and offers unwelcome advice) is incredibly frustrating. How to DealIf someone is going out his way to put his nose in your business, call the snooping out. After that incident, I made a point to stop what I was doing every time this guy came by to turn around, face him, and politely ask how I could help him. A few times, when I caught him reading over my shoulder, I jokingly told him th at if that email was meant for him to read, I promised to send him a copy. And it did the trick After a few confrontations like that, his lurking subsided.3.The Fan-Turned-FollowerHaving co-workers who appreciate your work is pretty awesome. While its great to be appreciated by your boss, having the respect of your peers is a huge win- which makes this type of nosy colleague especially hard to spot.Early on in my career, Id made some suggestions to my teams procedures that ended up being widely adopted throughout the company. One of my colleagues, who was a few years younger, was particularly impressed, and asked me to share all my secrets with her so she could step up her game as well. At first, I was flattered- who wouldnt be?But, before long, that flattery bordered on stalking. She began shadowing me on every project possible and even tried to mimic my writing style. While most of the time imitation is a sincere form of flattery, in a competitive work environment where everyone i s trying to set themselves apart from the pack, having a carbon copy of yourself isnt exactly ideal. How to DealHave an office stalker? Turn the tables on her. In my case, instead of giving my colleague the opportunity to follow in my footsteps, I asked her if I could follow in hers. I spent less time detailing my methods and more asking her how shed approach an issue. When she asked me how I was umgang a sensitive situation with a client, Id reply by telling her I was stuck. Then, Id ask her advice on crafting an email or how to prepare for a difficult phone conversation. And you know what? Its a good thing I did. She turned out to be pretty fantastic at the job, and we eventually learned to collaborate productively and developed our own unique working styles as a result. While curiosity may spell doom for the cat, it doesnt have to do the same for your career. Keep your wits about you, and use these tips to maintain a healthy level of respect between you and your nosy colleagues.Phot o of people working courtesy of Shutterstock.

Four benchmarkers everyone should follow
Four benchmarkers everyone should followFour benchmarkers everyone should followIt is the inevitable question on first dates, job interviews and when dining with your overzealous aunt Where do you see yourself in five years? Before you roll your eyes thinking about it, remember that while you might not need to know exactly where youll be in a few years, having goals is an essential part of career development. And while the expectations you set for yourself might be vastly different than those of your partners or your best friends, there are a few general benchmarkers every professional should work towards. As career coach and author Mary Camuto explains, these signify progress, recognition or achievement on your journey. Whether they are formal or informal, dreaming of something isnt enough - its important to put the work in to arrive at your hopeful destinationHere, a few suggestions to help you brainstorm and set your ownI am finding the right opportunities for growthWhether early or a few years into your career, everyone has experienced a dead-end gig. Even if you liked that job (or your current one), if you cant positively say youre in a current situation that aids the progression of your skill set, career expert Joy Altimare says its time to seek greener pastures. As she explains, it is important to seek a position that helps you tap into your potential as a keen, strategic, compassionate and valuable professional. On the other hand, it isnt merely up to your manager to provide these runways. Sometimes, you need to create your own too. As Altimare explains, consider seeking out networking events, continued learning seminars or programs and other avenues that build your robust network. You might also consider creating a must read list of business or development books that allow you to reach your full value - whether they are saving you time, money, sanity, or all three.I have a tribeEver hear the saying it is lonely at the top? Thats because if you dont pri oritize interpersonal relationships, you could wind up being incredibly successful but alone. Though it might not directly translate in your LinkedIn profile or your income, when you have a supportive group of friends, colleagues, and mentors, youre mora likely to perform at a higher level. Not only do they give you confidence, but they become your cheerleaders and your editors, providing both feedback and encouragement. If you dont feel as if you have a tribe, Altimare says it is a must-meet benchmarker for anyone in any industry or career level. Its so important to find and nurture healthy work-relationships. This is the network that will serve you well as you progress through your career, she explains. Cultivating mutually respectful relationships and building a reliable network of professionals in your 20s and 30s should be more of a milestone than getting that corner office.I am actively investing in my financial futureThe most successful of workers arent just thinking of today or the number of zeros at the end of their paycheck but rather, about what theyll have saved in 10 years. And 20 years. And 30. One of the key measures of accomplishments and maturity is investing in your financial future. Altimare explains if you havent carved out a plan, it should be a top benchmarker since it defines so much of your career and your ability to retire. If it all feels a bit overwhelming, thats normal. But it doesnt mean you should hide from it. Instead of treading water, seek the advice of an advisor, read up on books or attend classes to update your knowledge.I am creating my ideal lifestyleClose your eyes and imagine what your ideal life looks like. While plenty of us have complaints, some are able to squint and actually envision the life they lead. Career coach Christine Agro says this is a smart practice to understand what youre ultimately working towards.Whether this is owning your own home (or a few), working fewer hours but bringing in a larger income or logg ing hours remotely, this benchmarker sets the scene for your day-to-day, week-to-week, and year-by-year priorities.

He has held a variety of positions in the company, working in the areas of modeling and simulation, testing, manufacturing, research and development, functional and performance requirement verification, geschftliches miteinander development, and spacecraft operat ions. He is a Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) from International Council on Systems Engineering, a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) from Arizona State University, and a graduate of Lockheed Martins Engineering Leadership Development Program (ELDP), which is a selective program designed to prepare high-potential early career engineers to become technical leaders. A member of ASME since 1999, Kai served as chair of the ASME Washington D.C. Section from July 2014 through June 2016 and held a number of other positions with the section, including vice chair and treasurer. He received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Wichita State University in 2002 and a masters degree in systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2009.Whats inside your engineers notebook? My notebook contains my to-do list of action items for work as well as random notes from the meetings and conversations I had during the day and week.Kai Sysounthorn (left) with his bro ther, Adam, at Game 1 of the 2015 World Series in Kansas City, Mo.Whose notebook would you fruchtwein like to peek into? Why?Given that I started my career with Lockheed Martin as a mechanical and systems engineer, I always admired the innovation, can-do attitude, and organizational skills of Kelly Johnson. He welches the managing lead aeronautical and systems engineer for Lockheed Skunk Works from the 1950s through the 1970s. He began his career with Lockheed in 1933, after graduating from the University of Michigan with a masters in aeronautical engineering. At Skunk Works, Johnson and his team designed and created the most advanced aircrafts, from the P-38 Lightning to the SR-71 Blackbird, pushing the envelope of what technology can do.How and when did you know you wanted to become an engineer?Probably like most college freshmen, I switched my major a few times. I began as a liberal arts major, with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist because I loved the field of psychology in high school. After completing the Psychology 101 course, I realized that it would be necessary to attend medical school and also complete a four-year residency in order to become a board-certified psychiatrist. As much as I enjoyed psychology, I preferred the option of entering the workforce after earning a bachelors degree. Eventually, my childhood friend Kimsuor, who was in his fourth year of the mechanical engineering program at Wichita State University, persuaded me to take a few ME courses. From that point on, I was hooked. I loved the fact that mechanical engineers are so versatileWhats the most exciting project youve ever worked on?It is difficult to select only one, as I have worked on many exciting projects throughout my career. I would have to say my most challenging and valuable in terms of personal growth was Lockheed Martins Engineering Leadership Development Program (ELDP), which had its roots in General Electrics legendary Edison Engineering Development Program. Th e ELDP is a selective three-year program designed to prepare high-potential early career engineers to become technical leaders. My work rotations in the program included serving as a business development analyst for the vice president of business development and as program engineer for a centralized supercomputing facility. In addition, I had to complete a year of graduate-level study in software development and attend many week-long management training conferences. What do you think youd be doing if you hadnt become an engineer?Without a doubt, I would become a teacher, probably teaching honors science classes in junior high or high school. If I was not teaching at the K-12 level, I would become a professor at the college level, teaching engineering.Whats your favorite activity when youre not working?I wish I had more time to practice Kenpo Karate, a style of martial arts. I have been studying Kenpo Karate since I was 13 years old, and hold a fourth-degree black belt. These days, if I am not hanging out with my friends, I am working toward my second masters in finance from Harvard Universitys Extension School. Was there a book or a movie that piqued your interest in science or inspired you to become an engineer? The TV series, Star Trek The Next Generation, which aired from 1987 to 1994. Star Trek The Next Generation had the cool futuristic starships and technology. My favorite characters were Data and Worf. Also, the 1983 movie, The Right Stuff, about the astronauts on Project Mercury, the first manned spaceflight by the United States.Who are your heroes, either within the engineering profession or in the rest of your life?Beside my parents, I would say my Kenpo Karate teacher, Tom (Sibok) Kelly. Sibok was practically my second dad. Along with the martial arts, he taught me how to be my own person and to be true to myself.Whats the most meaningful or rewarding aspect of being connected to engineering?Engineers and scientists, by their nature and training, are s earching for the truth. No matter what your initial assumptions are, as engineers, we are required to find solutions based on rigorous science, not politics or personal beliefs. What does ASME mean to you?Its a network of professional engineers and scientists whose goal is to advance engineering and instill upon the future generation of engineers a passion to make a career in the sciences. No matter what your initial assumptions are, as engineers, we are required to find solutions based on rigorous science, not politics or personal beliefs.Kai Sysounthorn
